Punggai trip report

Post by Jingguo »

Hello everyone. Here is a short report on the recent Punggai astronomy trip report from 29/08/08 - 31/08/08. I, Zhongye and Remus set out from Changi boat jetty on the bum boat around 2pm+. We share a few jokes on the way. Mr Au was waiting for us when we arrive the new jetty at Pengerang. We managed to load up all our stuff amazingly and set off to have our lunch and abit of shopping before we reach the chalet. The chalet accodomation and facilites was good. Remus and Zhongye set up their scope for the nite. Early part of the 1st night was more or less playing hide and seek with the sky. The cloud keep coming and go causing us to keep go in the chalet room and out the field to and fro. We keep outself busy with come short game while the cloud was around. The cloud manage to clear up around 1am+ and the lighting when off as well makeing observering better. Remus and zhongye began their imaging after the cloud clearup while i was looking out for any sight of cloud as well as enjoying the nite sky with a EXTREMELY powerful laser pointer!! Did manage to catch some constellation like Sagittarius and scorpius before they set as well as the winter and summer triangle. NUS high school student with the rest came around 2am in the morning and they began to observe right after that. They brought along an 10" dob as well as a VC200l and sphinx mount. Meng Lee was giving them an introduction to the nite sky as well as the sky direction. We ended the session around 5am++ and went to sleep immediately while zongye was alone taking dark frames till 6a++. The 2nd day started with a brief explaination of imaging process conducted by Remus. While the nus high school student was having an afternoon lecture conducted by Meng lee. The rest was still sleeping throughout the day. It was clear sky for most of the day till nitefall. The sky was quite good for a short while before cloud cover again and some smog from nearby vehicle. At around 11pm the northern and eastern sky clearup but with some left over smog in the air. Imaging and observing session begain right after. To my surprise at around 12am, i could see fireworks coming the town afar. The firework show was around 10 min. It was quite an enjoyable one. Many were guessing it was for the malaysia national day on the 31 Aug. The rest continue with their observing and imaging shortly while i was moving around between Mr Au, Meng Lee and Remus to look at what their doing and cracking some lame jokes with Meng Lee. We ended the nite session around 4am. Zhongye was waiting orion to rise around 4am to take come images. I guess his persistent paid off. We packup in the morning and set off back to Singapore around 10am. All in all the trip was a pleasant and enjoyable one.
