Hi all,
It's been quite some time since I last did any observing with my small 70mm Pronto, so I will be taking it with me when I go out this afternoon. When I return later this eveing and if the skies are clear over Toa Payoh, I will be setting up at the Toa Payoh Park (opposite the HDB Hub and just beside the Toa Payoh Swimming Complex) from 10pm onwards. I will be testing a new TV eyepiece while I'm there.
Those interested are most welcome to join me.
You may want to call me at 9 362 1186 just before you make your way here just to make sure I'm there.
Clear skies,
Probable observing session at Toa Payoh Park 29/2

Despite the presence of high clouds and a thin layer of haze in the sky, the observing session did go on as planned, and the Pronto was at the park from 9:30pm-12:30am. The park has changed quite a lot since the last time I was there. Some of the trees in the area have been cut down and there seems to be some works going on in the area where I usually set up. With the trees gone, the observing area was now exposed to all the lights from the heart of Toa Payoh Central just across the road. Time to look for an alternative site !
Anyway, despite the light invasion from across the road and the high clouds, haze etc..., we still managed to hunt down and observe the following non-usual objects. The following 4 objects were also first time observations for me :
IC 2391 OC in Vela
NGC 2354 OC in Canis Major
NGC 2451 OC in Puppis
NGC 2546 OC in Puppis
Those of you with wide field scopes should try these objects too on your next session with your scope. Some of the clusters above contain relatively bright stars, but they are very scattered. Others are rather compact and require higher magnification to resolve.
Just before we packed up, we also managed to catch 3 locally popular NGC objects in the Carina region : NGC 3532 [OC], NGC 3293 [OC] and a wee bit of the Eta Carina Nebula. All 3 objects are relatively close to each other, so those with wide field scopes can just hop from one object to another through a low power eyepiece.
The only failed attempt for the evening was on NGC 2298, a small globular cluster in Puppis. Has anyone seen this object before in Singapore ?
Clear skies,
