This month is something like 'The Jocelyn Bell Burnell Month'. We have a few stargazings here and there, some interesting Astronomy camps and overseas trips, and too many talks from Jocelyn Bell Burnell.
A Professor who has accomplished more than you would have in 3 lifetimes, Bell is currently Visiting Professor of Astrophysics at the University of Oxford, a Fellow of the Royal Society and a Dame of the British Empire, having left her post as the President of the Royal Astronomical Society in 2004.
Stargazings @ NUS
There will be two stargazing sessions at the National University of Singapore (NUS) this month. The first will be on 6 Feb, and the second will be on 28 Feb, after a Jocelyn Bell Burnell's talk.

Valentine Star Party
The Marine Parade CC YEC Astronomical Society will be organising a Valentine’s Day Star Party targeted at singles to meet and mingle.
It is supported by Marine Parade Family Life Champion (FLC) and Marine Parade CC Youth Group (YEC).
The participants will get to know one another better through speed dating, interactive crossword puzzle game and romantic star gazing session.
For singles 20 to 35, making new friends under the stars!

Camp for Warriors
Camp Dates: 20, 21, 22 February 2009
Camp Fee: $10 (include meals, camp T-shirt and prizes!)
The Thrill of Adrenaline: That’s what Camp for Warriors is all about!
Youths of all ages explore “the heavens” with telescopes and experience the joys fellowship with astronomers from various schools. In this “immersion” experience people get to know and interact with student astronomers, learn to operate telescopes, keeping night-time hours, and interpreting their own observations.
This camp allows youths experience astronomy in a fun way during the day time with exciting activities. The participant does not require a prior background in astronomy to join for this camp.
For youths age 15 to 20.
Star Time: Friday, February 20 at 2:00pm
End Time: Sunday, February 22 at 11:00am

Punggai Astronomy Trips
For this year, there will be monthly trips to Malaysia for stargazing, organised by Carole.
It will be over a weekend (Friday night to Sunday morning) and at Punggai (Johor). Punggai is known for its great food and wonderful dark skies.
5 people will share a clean aircon chalet at S$130 per person. Each chalet will have one queen bed/one single bed and two mattress. The dates are listed below.

Talk by TASOS
The Astronomical Society of Singapore (TASOS) will be giving a talk at the Singapore Science Centre’s Observatory on the 20th of February.
Time: 7.30pm - 9.00pm

Rhapsody on an Equatorial Evening
In conjunction with the NUS Faculty of Science 80th Anniversary and The International Year of Astronomy 2009, enjoy a one-night-only stargazing evening. Open the Jewel Box of the Southern Cross and journey along our Milky Way. Look Taurus in the eye and marvel at the beautiful Pleiades and Orion Nebulae. Survey lunar craters to see if there really is a Man on the moon. Learn about astronomy from our friendly experts and listen to starry legends from Greek, Indian and Chinese mythologies. Amid the serendipity of the activities, pen your own poem and stand to win attractive prizes!
There will be a pre-event talk by world-renowned physicist Professor Jocelyn Bell at 6pm at LT27.

Science in the Café: What's Going on in the Universe?
The Singapore Science Centre, together with the British High Commission and National University of Singapore, is organising a talk, Science in the Café, on 26 Feb 2009 at 7.00pm.
The speaker will be Prof Jocelyn Bell Burnell, a Visiting Professor from the University of Oxford. The talk is titled 'What's Going on in the Universe?"
Attendance is free of charge but pre-registration is required.

A Celebration of Women in Astronomy
Please note that entry to this event is through invitation only.
In conjunction with the National University of Singapore’s Faculty of Science 80th Anniversary and The International Year of Astronomy 2009, Professor Jocelyn Bell has been invited to Singapore and Raffles Girls’ School (Secondary) is proud to host her lecture for invited secondary schools.
The Raffles Girls’ School (Secondary) Science Club (Scitaré) will be organising this lecture, and hopes it will provide a platform for students’ active engagement with the issues discussed, as the invited speaker has a keen interest in the issues related to the education of science and astronomy.
The title of this lecture is “A Celebration of Women in Astronomy”. The speaker will discuss some of the major advances by women in science and also her field of research, Astrophysics. Some of the questions we hope to address are:
- What are some of the many unanswered questions in science, specifically Astrophysics, today?
- What are some of the challenges that young people and, in particular, females see as a deterrent to a life as a scientist?
- What are some of the challenges faced by the scientist in their research work?
- Are there specific traits that females bring into the work of a scientist?
- Why do we need to inspire young minds when science is fun?
- How can educators inspire young minds?
