Wide star field from Melbourne

CCD vs Film? Lots of time vs no patience? Alright, this is your place to discuss all the astrophotography what's and what's not. You can discuss about techniques, accessories, cameras, whatever....just make sure you also post some nice photos here too!

mate! that was taken from the national park...not melbourne....hahahaha..... it was a fun experience though....as you compose the pictures, you got to look out for any jumping roos that may just bump onto you in the darkness....

A very nice shot! The composition is very good.

The Coal Sack is so dark and gaping it looks like come sort of black hole!

Yes, pls tell us what the set-up was: lens, mount, camera settings, etc.

Also, why are the foreground trees are so bright? Just by star-light or some foreground lighting?

The setup as below:

Canon 5D, 24mm, 30secs Exposure, F2.8, ISO 800, Fixed tripod mount, Single Frame RAW +1EV

This is my first attempt at wide starfield shots. We drove for a short distance from Halls Gap township and stop at some random place to shoot. Yes the coalsack and Eta carinae are very apparent and prominent to naked eyes.
The trees are conveniently illuminated by the nearby lamppost.

Hope you guys enjoyed it.

Sam
