CCD vs Film? Lots of time vs no patience? Alright, this is your place to discuss all the astrophotography what's and what's not. You can discuss about techniques, accessories, cameras, whatever....just make sure you also post some nice photos here too!
Got some moon-setting shots taken from Tasmania over the Easter weekend. The following two picture composures were taken from the village town of Strahan (pronounced "straw-n") while road biking in the early morn before the sun rose. The first picture shows the setting full moon against the bay waters together with an atmospheric phenomenon called The Belt Of Venus which is typically seen just before sunrise (and after sunset). It is characterized by a pinkish glow or antitwilight arch that extends roughly 5°–25° above the horizon on a clear day.
Some further notes: Often the glow is separated from the horizon by a dark layer, the shadow of Earth. The arch's light rose (pink) color is due to backscattering of reddened light from the rising or setting Sun. A very similar effect can be seen during a total eclipse of the Sun.
Both pictures were taken using a Canon 400D with its default kit lens. The second picture was taken from a different location within the bay area of Strahan but with the sun just risen, casting its light on the town buildings and boats.
