Jupiter on 13th August..

Post by Canopus Lim »

I did a quick observation of Jupiter on 13th August (Sat morning at 2am to 2.30am) using my 88mm refractor.

Seeing was average as the the planet was about 45 deg to 50 degree above the horizon. I could discern a few belts and luckily the GRS was in sight also. The GRS was easy to see with the small scope. The small scope could also resolve intricate details in the SEB and NEB. At the north side of the globe there are many belts but the scope could not resolve them. I could sense that there are many belts. Also I could see festoons running across the SEB and NEB and there were about 4 of them. I was operating it at about 120x and 160x.

The NEB had a few white spots (or rather small 'holes') in it. I am wondering if they were white ovals but I could not verify it since I did not set up my larger scope. Has anyone been observing Jupiter at that time with a modest telescope (larger than mine..maybe 8 inch) and saw white ovals at the NEB? If so, that is rather fantastic that such a small scope is able to see white ovals!
