Jupiter Opposition - 14 August 2009

Post by starfinder »

Here's a reminder that Jupiter will be at Opposition on 14 August 2009, just 2 days from now.

These few weeks around Opposition will be the best time of the year to view the King of Planets.

At Opposition, Jupiter is opposite to the Sun's position and therefore rises in the East when the Sun sets in the West.

I've been observing Jupiter in the past few weeks and it's certainly interesting this year.

Here is an image taken this evening, when there was quite a lot of turbulence:

Hi Gavin
Your energy never fails to amaze me. But of course, having a nice view and able to do imaging from the comfort of your home helps too!
Nice image. Can the little red dot and comet impact scar still be seen?

Hi,
Oh... Jupiter Opposition on Friday night. No sure whether will be free that night...

Anyway, I'll "recall" my scope primary mirror from my dry cabinet and assemble my Newtonian back tomorrow... hopefully, the weather will clear up specially for Jupiter.

Have a nice day.

Hi Rich,

Sorry for the late reply!

Tks. I have not seen the comet impact scar since I saw it in late July. I might have seen it last Fri through a 5" super ultra apo, but not sure.

I think the scar would have dissipated by now. See this update as of 18 August:

"August 18. Say goodbye. The dark marks are fading and breaking up, as shown in the images at right."

Little red dot: not sure what that is. The GRS seems more prominent this year than last, and there also seems to be more other markings on the globe overall.
