Notice : Observing Session at Toa Payoh Town Park (27/3)

Post by harlequin2902 »

Hi all,

There may be an observing session (weather permitting) this coming Saturday (27/3) at Toa Payoh Town Park from 8pm onwards. All are welcome. I can be contacted at 93621186. If you are joining us late, please give me a call just to make sure that we are still there when you come.

During this observing session, I will be testing out my self assembled RX80-L , f/8.75 Refractor :D

If the reponse is good, I will bring out my primary scope for the session as well.

Clear Skies !

If you come from the Kim Keat Link, the nearest car park is just beside the pond after the Toa Payor Swimming Cpix. From the car park, you should see a View Tower about 100 meter away. The observation site just around there.

There are actually 3 carparks in the area : (1) large carpark outside the Toa Payoh Stadium, (2) HDB Hub underground carpark or (3) small carpark just beside the Toa Payoh Swimming Complex.

The HDB Hub carpark seems to be the one that's closest to where we usually set up.

Soon Yen : which one did you use the last time you came ?

I parked at the small car park. At least don't need to cross the road.

Did you test your DIY refractor??? How is it??

Anyway, yesterday night was very hazy, but the view of jupiter was just great... and I saw one of the best view of the Great Red Spot... the contrast was just great... too bad I didn't bring along my digital camera. :(

Have a nice day.

Our observing session a Toa Payoh did go on as planned, but we didn't go to the park as the skies were not that promising for any deep sky work. In the end, we just set up our scopes near the very brightly lit library area. Other than myself, Zong Yao, Soon Yen and new member Weikang were there too. Zong Yao brought a Viper 90mm MCT and Soon Yen had his self made Refractor. Total 4 scopes

I did bring the Refractor down to show the rest, but we didn't really use it as my current mounting method wasn't appropriate due to Jupiter's elevation by then. It would have slipped off the mount due to the heavier back.

There was nothing much to see yesterday, high clouds moving in and out. We spent most of the time observing Jupiter (a lot of detail observed when it was overhead), and we managed to see the GRS from ~ 11pm. It was just starting to rotate into view. Also, at ~ 12:40am, with the GRS almost centered along the SEB, we also managed to detect that dark, "spikey" disturbance between the SEB and NEB. Did you see it visually too, that feature you managed to capture on camera just recently ?
