World Astronomy Day

Post by chrisyeo »

Should we organise something for world Astronomy Day, 24th of April?

It would be great to just set up in some public area to show people that such a hobby exists in Singapore. :) like Samuel did that time in Toa Payoh..

Cheers,
Chris

p.s. Am curious to know if Singastro, TASOS and the school clubs/organisations have any means of collaborating on something like this.

I woudn't mind helping out if I can. But I am not to sure about any means of collaboration with other club. Need to discuss with the main core group who formed SingAstro.

Nice, World Astronomy Day! I like the idea of showing everybody that this hobby exists. I have many friends who like astro but 'don't know where to start' or 'have no time for it', and it'll be good to show them what astro in singapore is really like, maybe they'll change their mind :D

However the collaboration with schools/organisations part needs a lot of discussion about, since administrative work usually would not allow such a collaboration to happen. Schools (JCs) for example, would definitely not loan out their 8 inch scopes, order by the office. They're afraid the person loaning would 'accidentally' do something to the scope and cannot repay it back. Also, the date is quite a rush for many people.

Hi. This Saturday is the 24th and many clubs all over the world are organising some kind of publicity event. The theme this year is to publicise the June transit of Venus, that has not happened for a 128 years.

How? Anyone interested in setting up in some public place? If we're chased we just move on somewhere else? Can have some posters for information. Very informal, considering the short notice...

Samuel,

Are you free on Saturday evening? Want to set up in Toa Payoh, outside the library?

Any volunteers/suggestions for places?

Chris
I'm usually free and do observe quite often at Toa Payoh on Saturday/Sunday evenings with my primary scope, but we're always at the mercy of the sky conditions.

Something to note if you want to come over to Toa Payoh for an intended public session : (I'm sure those who have joined me in my Toa Payoh sessions would have noticed) Unless the public already knows that there is some major astronomical phenomena going on (like the Mars Opposition of 27th Aug'03) - majority of the people who are actually curious enough to come up to join us and take a few peeks through the eyepiece everytime we set up for a casual planetary observing session near the library area are the older generation mandarin or dialect speaking uncles and aunties or foreign workers on the way home. And the ones who are expected to show more interest - students, people in the working class and families on a night out, somehow keep their distance on any 'normal' night ... at most stopping by for a few seconds to ask or just observe from a distance to see what we're doing before going on their way.

Anyhow, assuming we'll have good weather this Saturday in Toa Payoh and if we really want to attract a crowd, we have to set up from around 8-9pm with at least 3 scopes. Or if anyone has any plans elsewhere this Saturday, I'll be happy to bring my Pronto along for it.
