4M DIY Planetarium

Post by fizzy123 »

Recently, while visiting Toy R Us for some casual seeing and shopping, I stumbled on this interesting, attractively packaged, DIY planetarium kit that was on sale. As it was only 14.95 SGD, I bought it out of curiosity to see what a cheap DIY kit can deliver and the potential of the kit as a tool for educating children regarding the night skies.

The planetarium was made by 4M, a HK based company that sells scientific kits aimed at young children. The other kits available are like forensic, solar system, magnets, mini-submarines, bones, which aims to inspire youngsters to be more interested in various sciences. This kit that I bought is targetted for children age 8 and above, aims to introduce constellations of both northern and southern hemispheres and attempts to show them how the stars are arranged in the asterisms.

Pros:
1) Simple and clear instructions, available in 5 different langguages on how to construct the planetarium.
2) All materials required for the constructions are included in the kit, e.g. scotch taps.

Cons:
1) Constellations in the celestial equators, are missing. E.g. Tarus, Orion, Canis major.
2) Some constellations are mis-spelled. E.g. Ursa Minor is quoted as Polaris
3) Poor product tolerance, leading to gaps forming in the sphere, which caused light to penetrate through.
