Scorpius Jewel box

Post by chrisyeo »

Hi

Was doing some observation around scorpius last night and directly above and to the left of the scorpius jewel box is this large field of faint stars that gave the appearence of tentacles - strings of stars enamating downwards and outwards from a central point. Can anyone confirm this?

Also, the jewel box appeared to have some nebulosity. Quite pretty. Can anyone confirm this also?

Clear skies,
Chris

Hmmm.... these few days the weather seems fine but high altitude clouds are prevalent, thus even saturn seem to have nebulosity around it.

You're probably right. BTW, the cluster is NGC 6231.

confirmed this morning that ngc6231 lacks nebulosity. Was probably high clouds that caused the effect.

Cheers,

Found out form August issue of Astronomy that the cluster above NGC6231 that I has talking about is catalogued as Harvard 12. It think its also co-catalogued as Tr 24 or Cr316.

Anyway, if anyone is in the region do give this cluster a look using low maginification. I really see strings of stars going out from a central point- like a meteor shower. Together with 6231, I think its a really beautiful area.

Actually, there are 2 more things near the Scorpius Jewel Box area, I've seen only one though. On top of NGC 6231 is a nebula, but i think it's very faint so I cannot see it. Slightly more upwards, you'd see another open cluster, and this one looks quite nice, fits my whole scope view of nearly 1degree. Forgot the number.

Will attempt it later and report more findings, if i can find the nebula :)

Report, sorry.. mebbe my ob site needs filters cos too much light pollution, I could barely see the big patch of open cluster above 6231 today, so the nebulosity is definitely not detected in my scope tonight.. Someone else could try the area? from the pictures i found on the net, it is abit reddish..

Oh and below 6231, there is a nice equilateral triangle made by 3 stars. Not catalogued as anything though, but it looks quite bright and nice. Definitely worth a seeing, IMO :)

I didn't detect nebulosity buy H12 was definitely visible today.

I also saw the equilateral triangle you described. I thought its catalogued as NGC 6242?

NGC 6231

NGC 6231 is a nice object to observe.

It resembles .Pleiades,

According to Burnham's Celestial Handbook, if this cluster were the same distance from us as the Pleiades, it would appear about the same size as that cluster, but it would be about fifty times brighter, and its brightest members would shine as bright as Sirius!
