SINGAPORE : Three people are dead after a boat carrying about 30 passengers sank off Mersing, Johor.

According to the local Chief of Police, Mohd Nor Rashid, the dead are believed to be Singaporeans.

He told Channel NewsAsia that another two passengers are missing, also believed to be Singaporeans.

The incident happened at about 1.30pm on Sunday, when the boat was travelling between Sibu Island towards Mersing's Tanjung Leman ferry terminal.

Others on board include Malaysians and a Chinese national.

Search and rescue operations are ongoing.

Malaysian police believe the boat was overloaded beyond its normal capacity of 12 passengers, and Mr Mohd Nor Rashid said strong winds and currents may have caused the boat to capsize.

Both the operator and the Malaysian boat driver have been arrested.

12 person boat is likely a speedboat.... which means it was REALLY overloaded.
I'm very scared to take those ferries: they're fully enclosed with only 2 smallish doors on either side and hold easily 40 people within. If something happens, I don't think I can even get out in time!

Have to agree with you on alot there cloud cover! When I went diving several times to Pulau Aur...the ferries from Mersing where questionable! It may seem normal for many, if you don't stop to think about safety issues and capacity!

The dive trips to Pulau Aur are not crowded as this incident, but to travel in pitch darkness with just a compass and the boat pilot's everyday experience...remains a serious safety issue. Lest alone, dive trips are never safe with the amount of divers, no first aid kit and the fact that it's a 4hr journey back to shore if you drown...isnt very nice to know isn't it! Then again, Mersing's nearest hospital to threat such drown cases is a 3-4hr drive away!! Considering a human has 3-4mins to live without oxygen, 10% tissue damage per 1min to the brain...hehe...go figure! Very few dive trips are planned and safe (very few) most are terrible!!

Sad to hear about this. Hence why the speedboat to Tioman was called off, reinstated, called off again....sigh*** never improving the system!
Makes me wonder also why the SG Duck Boat which has life jackets are all wrapped up in their packaging plastic!! Duh!! I did question this and was replied that it keeps it clean!! When in panic you now need to tear the plastic before trying to put it on while looking after your children!

Stay safe...and nowadays...be 'Kanchiong!!"...I know it sounds typically SG but it sure saves lives!!
My wife never complained about how much time, effort & money I spent on my Astronomy hobby!................suddenly I met her!!!
