One-Eyepiece Setup

Post by andeelym »

Hi,

I was actually thinking if it is possible or even advisable for a single-EP setup. Ok, I'll be honest, I don't make tons of money so I am kinda limited on funds, but after reading and listening, it seems that Televue is the way to go. And since I cannot afford a whole array of TV EP, I was thinking of just getting one of them and using powermates to increase the power.

I am using an 8" SCT and after using the eyepiece calc on the TV website. I've come down to the Nagler Type 5 26mm giving 76.9x, 153.8x (2x powermate) and 307.7x (4x powermate)

I am also thinking that having the powermates, I could couple them with my DSLR for some astrophotography using the T-rings for them.

What do you think of the setup?

Or you could get used Naglers off coudynights/Amart. I suspect the shorter focal length Nags will be almost as expensive as Powermates anyway (175 for a 9T1 vs 150 for a 2" Powermate). Its the longer length ones that get expensive and unfortunately you can't un-barlow to get there.
For my low power EP, I bought an Agena Astro 30mm Ultra-Wide. I haven't had the chance to test it in the VMC200L yet although in the Onyx (f6.75) it revealed significant aberation about 2/3 the way out. Its supposed to be much better above f/9 (which your SCT undoubtedly is)
Oh, did I mention it cost just a hair over SGD100, shipped? :)

@tungkian,
I just bought a Hyperion Zoom already. Just looking at getting a TV since it is so so highly rated.

@Cloud_cover,
Dun have leh... Been scouting around CN but nothing pops up. I do not have an Amart account so no use drooling over there.

IMO a 2X barlow isn't that useful.

In my experience you need a 3X improvement (e.g. if your wide-field is a 32mm, putting a 2X barlow on it isn't so amazing, you really want a 10mm as your high power EP).

Actually am using a 32mm, then my next one is a 6mm!! I use the 32mm for wide-field stuff and use the 6mm to look at planets. Also have a 2X barlow which I hardly use (except with the 6mm to look at Jupiter).

Bro, pm me your email. If I see anything on Amart I'll let you know :) Do also include what kind of EP you're looking for.
