CCD vs Film? Lots of time vs no patience? Alright, this is your place to discuss all the astrophotography what's and what's not. You can discuss about techniques, accessories, cameras, whatever....just make sure you also post some nice photos here too!

Tail Of NEAT

Post by kochu »

Hi all,

Though I kept a generous amount of digital real estate to the left of the photo for the tail, it was not very clear.

From the blobby nature of head , can it be that the tail is behind the head on a vertical plane , at this time , I mean not sideways as with other comets ???.

Hi Kochu and all

Saw your wonderful image of Q4 Neat in the album, It's a good shot.

Finally got around to process my batch of Q4 NEAT images. With minor histogram stretching and curve adjustment in PS, the tail can seen extending beyond the 1/3 deg of FOV. Tail definition is not as spectacular as T7 Linear seen last month though. Due to the fast moving nature of this comet, i had to settle on a composite of 2 images.

Would like to try my hands on generating animated gif of this fast moving comet if time allow.

Clear skies

Neat From Dempsey

Hi Matthew,

The shot is amazing. Your talent had succeeded in bringing out the shy tail. It is true that the format is a bit too small for showing the whole size of tail.

Hi,
WOW!!!! That's a super clean and clear image of the Comet. May be you can post the pre-process image of the Comet... interested to see how the original image look like?

Have a nice day.

Hi Matt.
yes....very nice and in full colour...! All those practice trips to Dempsey and Mersing certainly paid off. I seldom come across comet pics taken in full colour. Is this the true colour of the comet or due to your processing.
and yes, like weixing, I'm interested to see what the raw images look like.
cheers

Hi

For those who have miss or yet to see the comet, the following link leads an animated Comet Q4 Neat making her rounds in Monoceros, captured live on 9 May by 20 still frames.
http://pachome1.pacific.net.sg/~audiowo ... 09_ani.gif

Each frame is taken at a interval of about 90 sec. It show how fast the comet transverse across 10 arcsec in 30min. Image scale were cropped and downsampled to facilitate loading. it might take a while to complete loading as animation is over 1 mb in size.

For Weixing and Rich, who were curious about the raw images; The above clip contains raw subframe images that came straight from the camera. Each image was registered and aligned to create this gif and it is my first attempt in astro animation using gif; A fun but terribly time consuming experience.

Enjoy the clip.

Nice work Matt,
You really are full of creative juices. Maybe you can consider doing one for Jupiter and its moons? Or Venus transit as well?

Cheers
