If you want to view planets, then a small Mak would be good. Eg ETX90, C90, even the Skywatcher Mak 90. However, aperture wins, so get something bigger if you can stretch your dollar...I assume the $500 do not include tripod and mount head? else there's almost no options available..

by the way, now i got 6 choices:
1.Mcgill's ED80 refractor for $980 (way off budget)
2.Mcgill's Viper 90 Mak for $600 (abit off still)
3.Carlogambino's Nexstar 4 for $500 w/o eps but with solarfilter / with JMI case - $600
4.Ekezial's Tasco Starguide 4 with eps for $400
5.MCYM's MTO 1000 for $350
6.VinSnr's Orion viewmax 127mm Mak for $600
too many choices now...need recomendation.

IMO:
1 & 2 aperture too tiny
3&4 Generally has acceptable (not excellent) optics. Check scope's collimation first. Aperture still somewhat limited. Won't recommend this unless you really want a goto.
5 no experience with this scope so can't comment
6. Get this if within your budget. Enough aperture, portable, generally excellent optics, no hassle of goto with associated electrical hassle (batteries) or breakdowns...
