Since you're at it, see if you can find any gold? :P

The safest place is probably in a nuclear submarine. It cannot be affected by tidal waves, storms, volcano eruptions, typhoon, earthquakes. It does not worry about running out of fuel and water and can be submerged in deep oceans for many months. :P

Hold your fire, this is what I think and correct me if I am wrong.

“ … at such times a magnification of x75 will show the planet the same size as the full Moon to the naked eye.”
<Stars & Planets> Princeton Field Guides by Ian Ridpath/Wil Tirion
pg347 p2 line 3

My simple calculation:

Method A: Angular Magnification of telescope

If , Angular diameter of Mars(Ad_mars) = 24.5”
Angular diameter of Moon (Ad_moon) = 31’ 5.2” or 1865.2”
Ad_mars’ is the magnified image of Mars.

To make Ad_mars’ = Ad_moon,
Magnification = 1865.2” / 24.5”
= 76.1306 times

Method B: simple trigonometric

If, diameter of moon(Dmoon) = 3475 km
diameter of mars (Dmars) = 6790 km
average distance of moon from earth (d_moon) = 384,400 km
min distance of mars from earth (d_mars) = 55,000,000 km

Dmoon / d_moon = Mag *Dmars / d_mars
Mag = 73.2284 times

Taking the average of two methods, the magnification is about 74.6795 times. So the book is right.

When you see something become larger through your scope, it is just an enlarged image. The actual target did not move closer to you as you might think. Do what ever you like, but human are too small to make a significant move if Mars ever knock on our door.

If people ask me these questions:

Is mars as big as full moon??
No, even bigger! Mars physical diameter is 1.9540 times wider than moon’s.

Can I see anything bigger as it is with telescope??
Yes, do you want to see Mars bigger than full moon to naked eyes?

Hoax??
Only if you read it as “Mars look as big as Moon when both object being view with the SAME setup, either your naked eyes or your scope."

To me, it is
Image of Mars (x75 with telescope) same size as Image of Moon(naked eyes)

I hope we are able to tell the true story to people at the gathering. What's in the hand out is only half the story.

Yah that's why it is wrong to say that they are the same size when seen with naked eyes. Hmm.. 75x smaller means that if I want to see Mars as big as the moon using the telescope I need to have it 75x more magnification. So if I am looking at the moon at 200x and I see the angular size of the moon that large, in order to see Mars having that angular size I need 200x75=15,000x magnification. :P
