Hi,

Just to help clarify a bit:

August 12, 1900 - 2120 singapore time is the traditional peak of the Perseids, but there is a prediction that another possible peak might appear at 4.50am Thurs morning.

The usual maximum will see a ZHR of 100, and the 4.50am possible peak ZHR will also be 100, but possibly more.

My suggestion is watch at both times if you can. :)

Clear skies,
Chris

p.s. If you want to get an idea of how they make the prediction, and a sense of how accurate it might be, you can read up more info here: http://skyandtelescope.com/observing/ob ... 1289_1.asp

Hi folks:

Just a quick note to say we almost miss the entire Perseids in a resort beach in neighbouring Bintan, Indonesia. The sky was as 'bad' as in Singapore - a down to horizon whitesheet day and night.

Somehow towards the predicted peak time we managed to see 12-15 Perseids in a window of less than 1 hr.... in lousy LM 3 sky! For those who had asked for 'Divine' intervention - looks like your prayers were answered- thank you.

Almost all the Perseids were white- to slight yellow in color except 1 fireball that exhibited green-yellow tail and a short train. I centred my FOV on the compact 3-star Aries. Perseids meteors were fast - appearing over 40-50 degree from radiant. Not many stars were visible: The Corners stars of Pegasus dotted near Zenith, Pleaides appeared like a blurred patch while Old cresent moon and Venus decorated the eastern sky. The sea was calm and we had the entire beach to ourselve.

2nd night ( aug 13) was a wash-out.

OK, who is interested in the coming fireball-rich Taurids next month...?

Chia,

Thanks for the chance to chase the perseids under a not-so-starry sky in Bintan!

Though didn't manage to catch a meteor shower, it was an enriching experience knowing more abt the perseids, peering through your equipment and of course, drinking wine and eating oranges under the Bintan sky!
